Frequently Asked Questions
Will you be my primary care doctor?
I have chosen to specialize in CranioSacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, and digestive health. If you need prescription medications, preventive health exams, lab tests, or medical imaging, I will refer you to a primary care provider.
What is craniosacral therapy (CST)?
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach using light touch that relieves pain and dysfunction by releasing tensions held deep in the body. Here’s an eloquent video by a physical therapist named Kate Mackinnon that describes what craniosacral therapy feels like and shows what a treatment session can look like.
Patients lie fully clothed on a massage table, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Each treatment session is tailored to the individual’s needs. What you experience during a craniosacral treatment is highly individual, and varies from session to session. Some people feel deeply relaxed, and others are attuned to the dynamic changes happening in their body. As the body releases tension it is common to feel heat, tingling, pulsing, or fluid movement in that particular area.
You may feel afterwards like you need extra sleep, or you may leave feeling energized. It’s important to schedule your post-treatment activities for the latter part of your day accordingly. Allowing your body to rest and incorporate changes will help you to get the most out of your treatment. You may feel a decrease in pain or an increase in function immediately after the session, or the effects may develop gradually.
What is visceral manipulation (VM)?
Visceral manipulation is a gentle, hands-on approach to addressing dysfunctions of the abdominal organs. The patient sits or lies on a massage table, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. The treatment is gentle compression, stretching, elongation, and mobilization of the abdominal organs.
What kind of training does a naturopathic doctor (ND) receive?
Licensed naturopathic doctors attend a four-year, graduate-level accredited naturopathic medical school. They are educated in the same basic sciences as an MD, but also study holistic and non-toxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic physician is required to complete training in clinical nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and counseling. A naturopathic physician takes rigorous professional board exams to be licensed by Washington State as a primary care, general practice physician.
